HELP: Computer Questions: Adobe Reader

Answers to some of your computer questions.

How to Install Adobe Reader

DO I NEED Adobe Reader?

Many Web sites--including the library's--use files in the "PDF" format (identified by file names ending with ".pdf"). In order to view these files you need the free Adobe Reader (AR).

How do I know if I need AR? When you click on a link to a PDF file, your computer should display it.

BUT... If your computer asks you if you want to SAVE the PDF file, rather than showing it, your computer does not have AR properly installed.

HOW DO I GET Adobe Reader?

NOTE: These instructions are for computers using Windows. Some details may vary from one version of Windows to another. Macintosh computers will be similar, but may not exactly match these descriptions.

Downloading and Installing Adobe Reader

  • Close any programs running on your computer except for your browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.).
  • Go to the Adobe Reader Download Site. (opens in a new window)
  • Note: Adobe will ALSO install the free McAfee Security Scan Plus software UNLESS you uncheck the box. If you already have antivirus software on your computer, you probably do not need this.
  • Click on the Download button, and follow the directions. You will be guided through an easy process of installing AR.
